Leg oedema in an 87 year old woman. An oedema is a swelling caused by fluid accumulating in body tissues. Here a sock is constricting the leg, causing the tissue to bulge. Gravity leads to the swellings appearing in the lower leg and ankle. It can be caused by several factors, including heart failure, kidney failure, cirrhosis of the liver and deficiencies in diet. Treatment is of the underlying cause, but the condition can be relieved with diuretic drugs.
