Psoriasis affecting a young woman's upper legs. A chronic skin disease (one of the commonest skin diseases in the U.K.), psoriasis appears as itchy, scaly red patches on the elbows, forearms, knees, legs, scalp, & other parts of the body. The cause is unknown, although the disease often runs in families & may be brought on by anxiety: its onset is most common in childhood or adolescence, and may be associated with arthritis. There is no known cure and treatment is palliative with lotions or ointments.
