Caption

False-colour chest X-ray showing lobar pneumonia in the lower lobe of a patient's right lung (purple area at bottom of left lung on image). The disease is caused by certain strains of the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. Alveoli (the air sacs of the lung) become blocked with pus, forcing air out and causing the lung to become solidified. Here, colouring is used to highlight a reduction in healthy right lung (left of image) compared to the normal left lung (right on image).
