Photograph of the fingers of a patient suffering from chronic paronychia, inflammation and swelling of the skin folds and tissues surrounding the nails. Chronic paronychia is usually caused by the fungus Candida albicans though it can occur in psoriasis. Acute paronychia usually results from infection by staphylococci bacteria though streptococci and various anaerobes may also be responsible.
