Ingrowing toenail with paronychia. This patient's left great toenail is ingrowing towards the second toe. The surrounding skin is swollen, bleeding and infected around this side and at the base of the great toenail. Infection of the skin fold at the side of an ingrowing toenail is known as paronychia. The condition arises from ill fitting shoes and poor foot care. Treatment of the condition is destruction of the nail bed on the inner portion of the great toenail. This may be performed by corrosive chemicals and wedge resection. Occasionally total removal of the toenail is needed. Treatment of the infection is with antibiotic drugs.
