Pneumonia. Digitised coloured X-ray of a patient's chest, showing lungs with pneumonia. At upper left and right are the lung fields (green) within the ribcage. The lower region of each lung shows shadowing (light blue), near to the heart (black, at centre). This shadowing is evidence of pneumonic infection, in which fluid and pus may collect in lobes of the lung. Most cases of pneumonia are caused by viruses or bacteria, and rarely by other types of organisms in people with an immunodeficiency disorder. Diagnosis of pneumonia includes listening to the chest with a stethoscope and is confirmed by a chest X-ray.
