Nasal polyp. View of a shiny growth inside the right nostril (centre). This is a nasal polyp, a benign growth that projects on a stalk from mucous membranes. Polyps are commonly found in the nose, intestine, larynx or cervix. Nasal polyps are said to be caused by the irritants in tobacco smoke; they are often found in people with allergic rhinitis. They can cause an obstruction, chronic infection and discharge. Polyps are usually removed by surgical excision.
