Caption

Parotid swelling. The swollen parotid gland of a patient suffering from a blocked salivary duct. The parotid gland lies in front of the ear and discharges saliva through a duct (Stensen's duct) on the inside of the cheek. The duct may become blocked by calculi (stones), lymphoma or growth of a tumour. Externally, the condition appears very similar to mumps (infectious parotitis), but is affecting only one gland.
