Caption

Parkinson's disease patient. Elderly man who suffers from Parkinson's disease holds a walking stick. A shuffling, unbalanced walk, rigid posture and slow trembling movements is typical of victims of this disease. Eventually the disease progresses to uncontrollable tremor affecting both sides of the body. Parkinson's disease is caused by degene- ration or damage to nerve cells in the basal ganglia of the brain. This causes a lack of dopamine, a brain chemical required for proper motor activity. Drugs help to supplement this lack of dopamine. Implanting dopamine-secreting foetal cells into the brain is another type of treatment.
