Pleurisy. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of the upper chest showing the lungs affected by pleurisy, inflammation of the pleura membrane. The heart (blue) is at upper centre and a vertebra (green) is directly below it. Between them is the aorta (dark circle) with the bronchi of the lungs on either side. Healthy areas of the lungs are purple while the inflamed areas are red and yellow. The pleura lines the lung and chest cavity. Pleurisy most commonly arises through infection. It causes a sharp chest pain during breathing as the two inflamed membranes rub against one another. Treatment is aimed at ending the infection, but pain killers are also needed.
