Psoriasis. View of the back of a 63 year old man showing the skin disease psoriasis. The skin appears white and flaky. The affected area may become itchy, and can cause joint stiffness. During psoriasis, new skin cells are produced about ten times faster than normal. Other sites of the body commonly affected include the elbows, forearms, scalp and the legs. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, although it is one of the commonest skin diseases. The disorder often runs in families and may be brought on by anxiety. There is no absolute cure known, although the condition can be relieved with corticosteroid drugs.
