Psoriasis. Close-up of skin showing the skin disease psoriasis. The skin appears reddened and flaky. The affected area may become itchy, and can cause joint stiffness. During psoriasis, new skin cells are produced about ten times faster than normal. Sites of the body commonly affected include the back, elbows, forearms, scalp and the legs. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, although it is one of the commonest skin diseases. The disorder often runs in families and may be brought on by anxiety. There is no absolute cure known, although the condition can be relieved with corticosteroid drugs.
