Polyps in the colon. Endoscope view of numerous polyps (growths) in the colon (large intestine) due to familial polyposis. This inherited disorder causes hundreds of polyps to grow on the lining of the colon. They may cause intestinal bleeding and diarrhoea, and almost always turn cancerous later in life. For this reason the polyps are monitored throughout life, and a total colectomy (removal of the colon) may be performed.
