Psoriasis affecting a fingernail. This skin disease has caused the nail to become pitted, thickened and discoloured. Psoriasis occurs when new skin cells are produced around ten times faster than normal. The disease may also be associated with joint stiffness and inflammation (arthritis). Although the underlying cause is not known, psoriasis often runs in families and can be brought on by stress, skin damage and illness. The condition can be relieved with ultraviolet light, a soothing emollient or corticosteroid drugs.
