Inflamed parotid gland in the cheek of a 78-year- old man. This patient is suffering from parotitis, an inflammation of the parotid gland that is usually due to a bacterial or viral infection of the gland. The gland and surrounding area become swollen and tender. Parotitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs. Good oral hygiene may also prevent any infection from spreading. There are two parotid glands, one in each cheek in front of the ear. They empty saliva into the mouth through ducts.
