Pneumonia. X-ray of a patient's right lung seen from the side, showing areas of solidification (white, upper left to lower right) caused by pneumonia. The front of the body is at right. This disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. The alveoli (the air sacs of the lungs, too small to be seen) become blocked with pus, forcing air out and causing the lung to solidify. Symptoms include coughing and chest pain. Treatment for pneumonia is with antibiotic drugs.
