Pilonidal sinus. Close-up of the buttocks of a 27 year old man showing an infected wound two weeks after surgery to repair a pilonidal sinus. A pilonidal sinus is an open wound caused when a hair grows into the skin and becomes infected. The treatment is surgery to remove a wide area of tissue around the wound. The resulting large wound is then left to heal from the bottom up. Repeat infections such as this are very common unless the wound is regularly and scrupulously cleaned. In some cases, plastic surgery may be required to repair the damage.
