Caption

Pleurisy. Coloured computer tomography (CT or CAT) scan of the chest of a patient suffering from pleurisy. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura, the lining of the lungs. It develops as a consequence of certain diseases - pneumonia, tuberculosis, chest cancers and asbestosis, amongst others. The inflammation causes the pleural surfaces to roughen and painfully rub together with each breath. As the illness progresses this pain may diminish due to fluid collecting, as in the boxed area of this image. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause for which the pleurisy is a symptom.
