Nasal polyp inside the nostril of a 12-year-old boy. A polyp is a benign growth that arises from the mucous membrane. This polyp arose from the skin inside the nostril rather than from the mucous membrane of the sinuses. The most common cause is inflammation of the nasal lining (rhinitis) caused by environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke. Treatment is either with corticosteroid sprays and drops or surgical removal.
