Nosocomial pneumonia. Frontal chest X-ray of the cloudy lungs of a 62-year-old patient with nosocomial pneumonia. This lung infection is caused by a variety of pathogens and is acquired in hospitals. Pneumonia causes an inflammation of the lungs and symptoms include chest pain, fever and shortness of breath. The tiny air-sacs (alveoli) in the lungs fill with pus and fluid (exudate), which hinders gas exchange. If left untreated, pneumonia can lead to acute respiratory distress and blood poisoning (sepsis). Treatment involves the use of antibiotics and bed rest.
