Bronchopneumonia. Frontal chest X-ray of the cloudy lungs of a patient with bronchopneumonia. This lung infection is caused by bacteria, in this case Staphylococcus, and is characterised by inflammation originating in the bronchioles (airways). The inflammation spreads to the tiny air-sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, which fill with pus and fluid (exudate), hindering gas exchange. Symptoms include chest pain, fever and a shortness of breath. If left untreated, pneumonia can lead to acute respiratory distress and blood poisoning (sepsis). Treatment involves the use of antibiotics and bed rest.
