Bacterial pneumonia. Frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a patient with bacterial pneumonia affecting the lower lobe of a lung (white, lower left). This lung infection is caused by a variety of bacteria and tends to be the most serious of all the types of pneumonia. Pneumonia causes an inflammation of the lungs and symptoms include chest pain, fever and shortness of breath. The tiny air-sacs (alveoli) in the lungs fill with pus and fluid (exudate), which hinders gas exchange. If left untreated, pneumonia can lead to acute respiratory distress and blood poisoning (sepsis). Treatment involves the use of antibiotics and bed rest.
