Legionnaires' disease. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs (dark blue) of a patient with Legionnaires' disease (legionellosis). This lung infection (light blue, lower right and left) is a severe form of pneumonia. It is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, which is spread by inhalation of contaminated water droplets. Symptoms include chest pain, fever and shortness of breath. The tiny air-sacs (alveloi) in the lungs fill with pus and fluid (exudate), which hinder gas exchange. If left untreated, this infection can prove fatal. Treatment is the use of antibiotics.
