Pneumonia. Chest X-ray of a pneumonia infection (lower left) in the lower part of the right lung of a 68-year-old man. Pneumonia is a bacterial infection where the alveoli (the air sacs of the lungs, too small to be seen) become blocked with pus and solidify. This is seen as the opaque areas at lower left. Symptoms include coughing and chest pain. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. This X- ray also shows the chest bones (blue) surrounding the lungs (dark spaces). The sternum (breast bone) runs down centre, and the ribs (horizontal bands) are also seen. The diaphragm is at bottom, and the heart is at lower centre and lower right.
