Petechial rash on the tongue of a 4 year old boy. These small spots (petechiae) are due to minute haemorrhages and are a complication of tonsillitis, a bacterial or viral infection that causes inflamed tonsils. They can also be caused by violent actions, such as coughing and vomiting. Treatment is of the underlying cause. Bacterial tonsillitis is treated with antibiotics.
