Caption

Polyp in the larynx. Endoscope view of of a polyp (centre) on the vocal cords in a patient's larynx (voicebox). The larynx is the lower part of the throat, and forms part of the upper respiratory tract. The larynx contains the vocal cords (centre left), where air passing out of the lungs resonates to produce vocal sounds. Polyps are tumours (growths) that occur on mucus membranes, such as those found in the respiratory tract. They are removed if they turn cancerous or begin to obstruct the air flow. An endoscope is a tube, with a camera on its tip, used to examine the inside of the body.
