Swollen uvula (centre) and inflamed tissue at the back of a 55-year-old man's mouth. This is a case of acute pharyngitis, a sore throat. The patient had previously had a tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the tonsils. This operation does not prevent future infections, but does reduce the frequency of a patient's sore throats. Severe sore throats are treated with antibiotic drugs.
