Paronychia infection at the side of a 12-year-old girl's fingernail. This patient has insulin-dependent diabetes. Paronychia occurs in the folds of skin that surround the nails of the hands and feet, and is usually caused by bacteria. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs, though patients with diabetes may suffer complications with hand and foot infections due to circulatory problems.
