Paget's disease. Deformed leg of a female with Paget's disease. Paget's disease, or osteitis deformans, is a chronic bone disease usually occuring in the elderly. The affected bone becomes thickened and deformed by excessive and disorganised resorption and formation of bone. Here, the affected bone is the tibia (shin bone) of the right leg (seen at left). Treatment is not usually required, but taking painkillers or bisphosphonates can slow down the abnormal process and promote growth of normal bone.
