The genus Ilex consists of over 400 species, the majority of which are evergreen shrubs growing up to 15 metres, found in woodland throughout the world. Holly is known for its bright red berries (not seen) that develop from the female flowers. It is cultivated for hedging and is used during the Christmas season as a decoration.
