Pneumonia. Coloured frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a patient with pneumonia affecting the right lung (left). Pneumonia causes inflammation of the lungs (bright purple). The tiny air-sacs (alveoli) in the lungs fill with fluid (exudate), which hinders breathing. Pneumonia can result from a variety of causes, including infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, and chemical or physical injury to the lungs. If left untreated, pneumonia can lead to acute respiratory distress and blood poisoning (sepsis).
