Depression. A young man sitting alone by a window and looking depressed. He is leaning on a table with his head in his hand. Most people experience the symptoms of mild depression, such as excessive sadness or despair, at some point in life. Depression can be triggered by illness, psychological factors, season, or hormonal changes, for instance in adolescence. It becomes a serious psychiatric illness when a patient's behaviour or physical state is affected, resulting in loss of sleep or appetite. Treatment for severe depression includes psychotherapy or antidepressant drugs and is usually successful.
