Woman depressed. Woman sitting on the floor with her head in her lap looking depressed. The woman is wrapped in white sheets with her face down indicating sadness, hopelessness or general loss of interest in life. Depression may range from mild feelings of melancholy and tearfulness to, in the most severe cases, hallucinations and delus- ions. Most people experience the more mild symp- toms at some time, usually in response to events such as death in the family or unemployment. Long periods of depression with no apparent cause may be a sign of psychiatric illness. The cause of true depressive illness can range from stress and loneliness to schizophrenia.
