Postnatal depression. Woman suffering from postnatal depression holding her baby. This depression is probably caused by the sudden hormonal, physiological and environmental changes that occur after the birth of a baby. Postnatal depression is usually quite mild and takes the form of irritability and tearfulness. It will usually pass within two or three days. Sometimes the depression is more serious and can result in suicidal tendencies and delusions. When this happens treatment takes the form of anti-depressant drugs, hospital care and counselling.
