Photograph of the hands of a person suffering from Raynaud's disease, a condition of unknown cause in which the blood flow to outlying regions such as the hands is restricted & the arteries enter a state of spasm. The condition is heightened by cold & by diseases involving blood vessels. Symptoms include numbness, coldness & pallor of the fingers. In more severe cases the fingers are swollen, purple & tingle. A third & rare form of the disease results in localized gangrene.
