Sinusitis: artwork of a human face showing the position of the various sinuses, the air-filled cavities lined with mucous membranes that are located in the cheeks and above & between the eyes in the facial bones. The sinuses are coloured red, and appear to connect the ear with the nose. Secretion of mucous by the sinus lining acts as a trap against microorganisms & foreign particles. Sinusitis is often caused by infection spreading from the nose; symptoms include headache & soreness & a discharge may be passed through the nose. A possible complication is the spread of infection to the meninges (the membranes enclosing the brain) causing meningitis.
