Sinusitis. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan showing the right maxillary sinus (left of image) affected by sinusitis. The black, triangular- shaped area at centre right shows the healthy maxillary sinus whereas the diseased one is green. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the membrane lining the facial sinuses, which is usually caused by infection spreading from the nose (top centre) to the sinuses. It typically causes a feeling of tension or fullness in the affected area and sometimes a throbbing ache. A common complication is the formation of pus in the affected sinus causing pain and nasal discharge. It is treated with antibiotic and decongestant drugs.
