Scabies. View of the red marks of a scabies infestation on the hand and between the fingers. Scabies is a skin infection by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It is characterised by severe itching, particularly at night, red marks and often secondary infections. The itching is caused by secretions of the mite, and scratching causes scabs and sores. The female mite burrows under the skin to lay her eggs. On hatching the young migrate from person to person by contact. Other commonly affected sites are on the buttocks and in armpits, on nipples and genitals; the head is seldom infected. The mites are killed by drug treatment with insecticide lotions.
