Sinusitis. Coloured X-ray of a patient's skull showing an area of inflammation (purple) due to sinusitis. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous-membrane-lined air spaces in the bones of the face that join with the nose (the paranasal sinuses). Here the inflammation is seen in the right sinus only. The inflammation is often caused by an infection that has spread from the nose. Symptoms include headaches and tenderness over the affected sinus, which may fill with pus. In persistent cases the sinus may need to be washed out or drained under anaesthetic.
