Sinusitis. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan vertically through a frontal view of the head of a patient with sinusitis. This is the inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (black). These sinuses are air-filled spaces in certain bones of the skull around the eyes, nose and upper jaw. They open into the nasal cavity which is surrounded by the oral cavity (blue, lower centre) and the two eye cavities (blue, upper right and left). Two of the paranasal sinuses of the ethmoid bone (centre) lie between the paranasal sinuses of the maxillary (upper jaw) bones. The left maxillary sinus (at right) is only partially seen, and may be filled with fluid, a sign of the sinusitis infection.
