Sinusitis. Coloured X-ray of the head of a patient with chronic sinusitis. Sinusitis is a bacterial infection of the sinuses (air-filled cavities in the skull). In this case, the maxillary sinuses (darker brown, centre right and left) are darker due to thickening of the mucous membranes. Membrane thickening can prevent the sinuses draining and prolong the infection. Treatment is with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.
