Fatty liver, coloured ultrasound scan. The liver is the large bright mass at upper centre. Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, is a condition in which large deposits of fat form in the tissues of the liver, causing it to enlarge and severely disrupting its function. It is very common in alcoholics and others who drink heavily, as high levels of alcohol disrupt normal fat metabolism. Cessation or moderation of alcohol consumption allows the liver to return to a healthy state. If the condition is not controlled, it can lead to death from liver failure.
