Scoliosis of the back. Computer artwork showing a dorsal (back) view of a human back with scoliosis (right), alongside a contour map of the same back. Scoliosis is a condition where the spine is abnormally curved or rotated. The cause is not fully understood, but may be genetic. The green line follows the spine, and the red and blue markers are reference points for comparison with other similar images. Scoliosis can be treated surgically, or by orthopaedic bracing.
