Caption

Photograph showing the mouth of a man suffering from acute tonsillitis, inflammation of the tonsils due to viral or bacterial infection. The tonsils appear swollen, red and spotted with a purulent exudate. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, and difficulty in swallowing. The tonsils are the two masses of sponge-like lymphoid tissue on either side of the back of the mouth. They play a role in the bodies response to infection by producing antibodies for the immune system and also by serving to trap and destroy any micro- organisms that should enter the throat.
