Chronic fungal infection of the fingernail. This is known as tinea unguium or onchomycosis, and is normally caused by the dermatophyte fungus. The nails grow very thick and turn white or yellow. Treatment is by antifungal drugs, taken as tablets. To ensure that the infection is cleared, the drugs may have to be taken for up to a year.
