Quinsy. Close-up of the mouth of a 16-year-old girl with a quinsy - a pus-filled abscess around a tonsil. This condition is a complication of tonsillitis (infection of the tonsils). Symptoms include fever, pain on swallowing or opening the mouth, headache and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Antibiotic drugs may clear the infection, but often surgical drainage of the abscess is necessary, followed by removal of the tonsils. The tonsils are oval masses of lymphoid tissue at the back of the mouth that normally help fight infection but sometimes become infected themselves.
