Tuberculosis. Coloured chest X-ray of the lungs of a 31 year old female patient suffering from tuberculosis of the lung. The upper lobe of the lung (red, at left) is affected showing opacities (green). Healthy lung fields are black; the heart is at centre. Tuberculosis is a disease in which the lungs develop dense opacities marking the infected sites. This infectious disease is caused in humans by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculo- sis. The infection is passed from person to person in airborne droplets. Symptoms include coughing, fever, chest pain and shortness of breath. It is diagnosed by chest X-ray and sputum tests, and is treated with antibiotic drugs.
