Fungal infection (ringworm) of the toenails of a 78-year-old woman. The nails have become thick and have turned yellow. They are excessively long and have curled in on themselves. Ringworm of a nail is known as onychomycosis, or tinea unguium. This infection has been caused by the fungus Trichophyton rubrum. Treatment is with antifungal drugs, which may have to be taken for several months to ensure the eradication of the fungus.
