Caption

Tendonitis. Coloured ultrasound scan of an inflamed tendon in the lower leg. Tendons connect muscle to bone, and can become irritated and inflamed by repetitive movements or injuries. Ultrasound scanning uses reflected high-frequency sound waves to image internal body tissues. Ultrasonography of areas of tendon pain might reveal inflamed or even ruptured tendons. Treatment is by resting the area, using pain- killing and anti-inflammatory drugs and, in extreme cases, steroid injections. Physiotherapy may also be useful.
