Miliary tuberculosis. Coloured frontal chest X-ray of the lungs of a patient with miliary, or disseminated, tuberculosis (TB) in the lungs. The lungs contain lesions (tubercles, yellow) consisting of infected dead tissue. Miliary TB is a chronic form of TB whereby the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis has entered the blood or lymph system and spread to other organs of the body. If left untreated, this type of TB has an almost 100% mortality rate. Treatment involves a long course of several antibiotics.
